Roman finds - witnesses of the past
Numerous Roman finds in Piesport bear witness to a rich and important past. Among the discoveries are the remains of a Roman wine press and a Roman milestone.
Late Roman sarcophagi were found during excavation work. One of the most important finds is a so-called diatret jar, which was found as a burial object in one of the sarcophagi (original in the Trier State Museum). it is one of the most magnificent products of ancient glassmaking. The vessel is an 18 cm high bell-shaped beaker with an upper diameter of 15.5 cm. The outer, delicate network is connected to the glass container by thin bars. The technique for making a Diatret glass consisted of carving both the beaker and the network from either a glass block or a molded blank using a grinding wheel and drill. The small number of glasses of this type found were among the most expensive fashion items of their time. The find in Piesport proves that trade products from distant regions arrived here.
