Mosel Cycle Path Section 1: From Perl to Nittel

An idyllic route, most of which runs directly along the Moselle with views of the Luxembourg side of the river and its vineyards.
The first section of the Moselle Cycle Route runs completely along the right, German side of the Moselle. However, Luxembourg remains in view along this entire stretch as the Moselle forms a border between these two neighbouring European countries. The surfaced cycle route winds through the vast Upper Moselle Valley without any gradients. Crossing the “Pferdemosel” nature reserve between Besch and Nenning is something quite special as many rare bird species shelter and breed in an abandoned river channel there. The landscape becomes increasingly shaped by the vineyards and wine villages along the banks of the river. Nittel, the end stop for this leg of the cycle tour, is a great place to finish for the day. Enjoying a glass of wine at one of the many local wineries or restaurants is a perfect way to round off the day.

Directions
Pass the train station and continue left through the underpass towards the Moselle. Turn right onto the riverside path and follow this asphalt route to Besch. At the end of the town, the route leads right, away from the Moselle, around an industrial plant and past renaturalised quarries. Then, turn left again towards the Moselle and follow the towpath there through the bird reserve, past the camping site to the Moselle bridge, which leads to Remich. Pass under the bridge on the asphalt riverside route and continue left of the railway tracks to Palzem. After Palzem, the route first leads away from the Moselle, through vineyards and then through meadows along the riverbank to Wehr. Continue between the Moselle and the railway track, past Wincheringen and Rehlingen, to reach this section's end stop, Nittel.

Tip
A visit to the Roman villa Nennig, which has the largest mosaic north of the Alps (160 square metres) is worth the detour (distance: 4 km there and back, open from March to November) A list of any currently closed route sections and relevant detours, e.g. due to roadworks, can be found here.
