Moselle Heights Trail

The almost 100 km long Moselhöhenweg has existed since 1910 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. From Wasserbilligerbrück, however, this long-distance hike does not always run directly along the Moselle - as the name suggests - but cuts off some Moselle bends to reach beautiful vantage points and finally ends in the village of Heißer Stein.
The Moselhöhenweg starts in the Moselstraße in the village of Wasserbilligerbrück near Oberbillig, on the northern bank of the Moselle. The first kilometres of this scenic long-distance hiking trail lead us immediately over the Olkener Berg through the village of Herresthal and past the Mohrenkopf to Pallien, a district of the lively and worth seeing city of Trier. We hike a short distance along the left bank of the Moselle and arrive behind Biewer on forest paths in the Pfalzel forest. Immediately after the forest we reach the outskirts of Ehrang and then march via Quint to the town centre of Schweich. There we recharge our batteries in one of the numerous cafés for the rest of the hike, on which we can now expect some elevations. We first tackle the ascent to Mehringer Berg and then hike up to Hundbuckel via a Landwehrkreuz at Hummelsberg. Once we have completed the two ascents, we are greeted by the Ensch forest with its vineyards, which we eagerly hike through. The Moselhöhenweg leads us out of the forest past the Kahlbachmühle, which we visit. We hike up the elevation of the Stallsack, follow the route via the regions of Schlingenborn and Krumfurche to the Weißlei viewpoint and continue through the village of Monzel to Lieser on the Moselle. Now the Wehlen forest lies ahead of us, which we hike through in a north-westerly direction. We then cross the B50 and orientate ourselves in the Zeltingen Rachtiger Forest towards the Lorenzenberg. However, we do not climb the summit, but hike around the Lorenzenberg and via Berghof to our long-distance hiking destination, the village of Heißer Stein on the Moselle.
