After the starting point in Perl and over the Moselle Bridge, the Moselsteig Trail takes you, for the second time, to the Hunsrück. You start this section at the bridge. You leave the road at the bridgehead and follow some steep steps to the slope edge. From here you will have stunning views of Mehring which is located a little lower than the path. Here, the Moselsteig Trail is accompanied by the Moselsteig Side Trail Mehringer Schweiz. At the sports field an access route branches off to the Roman Villa Mehring - a place where you can experience history up close. The trail continues to the edge of the forest, then a short steep uphill section, before the forest path takes you steeply downhill, to almost the level of the Moselle. You then hike on a flat meadow path at the foot of the slope to the edge of the Triolago recreational area. From here, a junction leads to Riol and the lakes. You also have the option of riding an exciting summer toboggan run! And this, right next to the Moselsteig Trail.

The following section to the summit cross on the Kumer Knüppchen requires some good stamina and sure-footedness. Suitable footwear is also a must. First, you continue at the Molesbach stream on a very steep incline. But also when you leave the watercourse, the Moselsteig Trail continues steeply uphill, over steps and past impressive slate rock formations to the summit cross. Here, you can rest and enjoy the view of the Moselle Valley and villages upstream of the Moselle – Mehring, Riol, Longen and Schweich, are the closest. The view of the leg 6 section from Schweich to Mehring over the Mehringer mountain is particularly beautiful.

The following section is also challenging. It leads over steps and natural cliff steps downhill at a steep decline, and then level along the slope edge. A longer uphill section through the forest follows and after a short distance through a coniferous forest, your arrive at an open beech forest. Now, you continue on a path to cross the K 85. Behind the road, you hike along the edge of the forest for a short distance and then on a path into the forest. The thick beech trunks are spaced far apart and you have a view from deep in the forest. The following uphill forest path takes you to the Fünfseenblick (Five Lakes View) viewing tower. In good weather you simply have to hike to the top! The view not only offers the “Five Lakes” as announced, but also shows the previous and upcoming legs on the Moselsteig Trail. To the North, you can also make out the many hilltops of the Vulkaneifel mountains in the distance.

The remaining section of this day trip is downhill and remains at the same height. After a section through the forest the Moselsteig Trail arrives at the edge of the forest. Continue downhill on a meadow of apple trees. After a further forest section you will arrive at a wayside shrine on the slope edge. You now have an unusually flat section for the Central Moselle ahead of you. Upstream of the Moselle, you will see Pölich; downstream of the Moselle you can see several towns: Schleich and Ensch on the left side, and Detzem and Thörnich on the right side, are the closest towns. The Moselsteig Trail continues on almost the same height on a dirt road between the edge of the forest and fallow vineyard areas. Views of the Moselle open up here over and again. Hinkellay, a resting area under a free-standing oak - the perfect picnic place - awaits you at the end of the trail. From here you have a view of a sea of vines. And embedded in this, is the destination of this stage, Leiwen, one of the largest wine growing villages at the Central Moselle. The Moselsteig Trail now continues on a steep incline through the vineyards and then with a noticeable slope in direction Schantelbach Valley. The access route towards the town centre branches off at the tennis grounds. It first takes you along the stream and then into the town. After 1 km you will reach the endpoint of this leg at the bus station in the Euchariusstraße.

You can reach the stage towns Mehring (stop bridge) as well as Leiwen (stop Euchariusstrasse) with the bus line 220.

There are regular connections. Please note that during the school vacations of Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland, at weekends and on public holidays there may be restrictions on the frequency! Please check the daily timetable on the website of the Verkehrsverbund Region Trier (VRT):

Mehring: There is some parking along the Moselstraße, which runs parallel to the B 53, or on Peter-Schröder-Platz (0.3 km link road).

Leiwen: Small car park directly adjacent to the Euchariusstraße bus stop and further parking on the square on Schulstraße

You can head off later in the day on this stage, even in warmer weather, as much of the climbing is through cool woodland.
