The Maars-Moselle cycle route (Daun-Bernkastel-Kues)

On the former railway line you cycle comfortably from the Vulkaneifel to the Moselle. Recommended for recreational cyclists, families with children & inline skaters in both directions.

Note: 10 November to 17 December 2025: Complete closure of the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route in the area between the "Altricher Weg" junction and the "Brautweg" car park. A diversion is signposted for cyclists.
This thoroughly enjoyable cycle tour begins in Daun, in the heart of the Volcanic Eifel nature park and geopark - very near the famous maars.  The route runs between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues along a disused railway track, with almost no ascents, and with all the attractions along the way is ideal for cyclists looking for a leisurely tour or for families with children. The tour winds downhill to the vineyards of the Moselle river, over viaducts and bridges, through tunnels and forests in the Eifel, past the maars and extinct volcanoes.

Family tip: On the Maar-Moselle cycle route, there is a section of around 11 kilometres which is specially marked as a children's cycle path.

Directions
The cycle path creates the easiest connection from the Vulkaneifel to the Moselle because it runs entirely on the former railway line from Daun to Lieser. It is the ideal and convenient route for getting to know the Vulkaneifel, with a variety of viaducts, bridges and tunnels. The RegioRadler »Maare-Mosel-Bus« is ready for the return transport from the Moselle to the heights!

Characteristics. Flat, completely paved route on a former railway line (Daun-Lieser) with gradients of 2.5 percent on average; rarely on roads with little traffic, therefore very good for families with children.
